About Your Membership

This section has basic information about your membership, including your tier, contributions, when you will be eligible for a pension and how to withdraw your membership if you leave public employment.

Service Credit

Service credit is one of the main factors in determining your pension benefit amount. If you work full-time for the State or a participating municipal employer for 12 months, you’ll earn a year of service credit. If you work part-time, your service credit is prorated.

You’ll also find information about how your service credit is calculated, how to purchase credit for previous public employment or military service, how leaves of absence affect service credit, and how sick leave can be used for extra service credit at retirement.

Final Average Earnings

Final average earnings (FAE) are another major factor in determining the amount of your pension. Your FAE is the average earnings during the set of consecutive years (three or five years, depending on your tier and retirement plan) when your earnings were highest.

Choosing a Pension Payment Option

Items That May Affect Your Pension

    Any word for my Credits ( sick days ) will be sent out its been years . Keep being told working on it.

      Virtually all initial pension payments are made timely by the end of the month following retirement. These payments are closer than ever to a retiree’s final calculation. NYSLRS often receives adjustments to earnings for retirees well after the date of retirement and is working hard to recalculate pension amounts and provide retroactive payments as quickly as possible.     Retired from NYS in 2020 as a LT. in DOCCS. It took over 18 months to receive monies owed to me from NYS and to adjust pension. I understand the delay with COVID and the number of retirements. However, I recently received a contract settlement with Council 82 that covered my last 3 years (2017-2020). I assumed my pension would be adjusted accordingly. Obviously, it was not! Now I’m being told from the union that it may take another 18 months before they adjust my pension. This is wrong on so many levels!! I shouldn’t have to wait one more day for my money!! I could possibly be retired for 4 years with the state still owing me money. I hope I’m still alive to enjoy!!

      You’re not alone, PEF contract was ratified a week after my retirement date, but I’ve been told that there is no estimate as to when the final audit will be completed, but expect to wait years!!

          Thanks for responding to this thread. Appreciate the apology. My husband retired 41 months ago.(9/2019)This wait is very disconcerting. As are the explantations we have gotten to explain why it has been so long. Is this a typical wait? I see someone above was processed much sooner. Why the difference and can he expect to be processed soon? Thanks

    What is the ‘lifetime’ of one’s password, i.e. one yr (=twelve months) or some other time span?

      For security purposes, the lifetime of your Retirement Online password is one year. Once one year has passed, you will be asked to reset your password upon sign-in.
